The exhibition gallery is located in the Malatestian Castle of Longiano and in nearby exhibition spaces. The collection was put together by the poet during the long period he spent in Rome and includes over two thousand paintings, sculptures and graphic works, some of which are of particular interest in terms of the history of Italian twentieth century figurative arts. The Balestra Foundation includes one of the most considerable collections of works by Mino Maccari as well as many works by Mafai, Rosai, De Pisis, Morandi, Guttuso, Vespignani, Bartolini, Zancanaro, Ziveri, Campigli, Fantuzzi, Sironi, Vangelli and other twentieth century masters. An entire room is dedicated to the works by foreign artists like Chagall, Kokoschka, Matisse, and Heckel. The Foundation also organizes important exhibitions on the most important protagonists of Italian twentieth century art and literature.
