The City Museum contains a number of chronological exhibitions which narrate the history of Carpi as well as the artistic and cultural heritage of the old Civic Museum established in 1898. This institution - during the highlights of the positivist period - had collected not just works of arts, but anything else which told the story of man's activities and his ingenuity through the centuries in Carpi: from ceramics to terracotta, scagliole to mementoes from the Risorgimento, prints and documents as well as architectural and decorative fragments from the city, machinery, equipment and multimedia documentation on agricultural activities, including cork production as well as more recent entrepreneurial activities in the clothing and textile sector.
A sizeable part of the twenty thousand pieces contained in the museum have been donated by private collectors. Of these, special mention must be made of the Pietro Foresti, Lando Degoli and Carlo Contini collections, given both their vastness and specific nature.
